The Multi-National Joint Task Force (MNJTF) has reported that 176 Boko Haram fighters have surrendered and 140 terrorists have been neutralized during Operation Lake Sanity II around the Lake Chad Basin. This announcement was made by the Commander of the MNJTF, Major General Ibrahim Ali, during a press briefing at the Theatre Command Officer’s Mess at Maimalari Cantonment in Maiduguri on Tuesday.
Operation Lake Sanity II, a coordinated military effort involving troops from Cameroon, Chad, and Nigeria, has achieved substantial success against Boko Haram. General Ali highlighted the recovery of a significant cache of arms, including 796 rounds of ammunition, one PKM machine gun, five AK-47 rifles, two motorcycles, and eight magazines, along with various other weapons and logistical support items.
“The operation has led to the destruction of crucial terrorist logistic bases and staging areas, particularly in Tumbum Fulani, Bagadaza, Zannari, Doron Naira, and other strategic locations in the Lake Chad Basin area,” General Ali stated.
The surrendered insurgents and arrested individuals are currently being interrogated and processed. The operation aims to eliminate terrorist strongholds in the Lake Chad Basin, and despite initial setbacks, including the loss of six soldiers, it has successfully neutralized over 140 terrorists.
The MNJTF has expressed gratitude to the Chiefs of Defence Staff from all troop-contributing countries and acknowledged the support provided by national operations such as Operation Emergency IV in Cameroon, Operation Hadin Kai in Nigeria, and the Chadian national operations.
“The success of Operation Lake Sanity II is a testament to the dedication and commitment of our troops,” General Ali affirmed. “Although the operation continues, the advancements we’ve made are critical steps towards restoring peace and stability in the region. The MNJTF remains committed to its mandate of creating a safe and secure environment in the Lake Chad areas affected by Boko Haram and other terrorist groups.”
This operation marks a significant milestone in the ongoing efforts to combat terrorism and restore peace in the Lake Chad Basin area. The MNJTF’s continued operations are expected to further weaken Boko Haram’s influence and bring lasting stability to the region.
