On June 21, 2023, the Inspector General of Police (IGP) of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Acting IGP Egbetokun Olukayode Adeolu, officially assumed his new role.
Appointed by the President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, His Excellency Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, on June 19, 2023, Ag. IGP Egbetokun takes over from the retired IGP Usman Alkali Baba, who dedicated 35 years of meritorious service to the nation. The transition of leadership between the former and new Police Chiefs took place at a brief yet vibrant ceremony held at the Force Headquarters in Abuja, culminating in the symbolic handover of the Nigerian National and Police flags.



Background and Appreciation
Ag. IGP Egbetokun Olukayode Adeolu, hails from Yewa South Local Government Area of Ogun State. He joined the Nigeria Police Force on March 3, 1990, as a member of the Cadet Assistant Superintendent of Police Course 16, graduating from the prestigious Nigeria Police Academy. His academic achievements include a Doctorate degree in Peace and Security Studies, a Post Graduate Diploma in Petroleum Economics, a Masters in Business Administration, a Certification in Electronic Data Processing/Computer Programming, a Masters in Engineering Analysis, and a Bachelors in Mathematics. Expressing his gratitude, the new IGP extended his appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, for the trust placed in him, emphasizing that his appointment is a commitment and a calling to make a meaningful difference in the shared mission of safeguarding the lives and well-being of every Nigerian.
Professional Experience
Ag. IGP Egbetokun Olukayode Adeolu, PhD, NPM, is widely recognized as an amiable policing strategist and an icon of accountability. Throughout his career, he has held several pivotal positions, gaining experience across all departments of the Force. Notable among his past assignments are Commander of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) in Lagos State, Area Commander in Osogbo, Osun State, and Gusuau, Zamfara State, Commandant of the Police Training School in Ikeja, Commissioner of Police in the Explosive Ordnance Department, Commissioner of Police in Kwara State Command, and Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of Zone 7 Abuja. Prior to his appointment as Ag. IGP, he served as the Deputy Inspector General of Police in charge of the Force Criminal Investigations Department.
