Demonstrating its inherent speed, expansive range, and adaptable nature, air power once again took center stage as multiple aircraft from the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) effectively neutralized criminal elements operating across various regions of the country. In the Niger Delta Region, precision air strikes were meticulously directed at the illicit activities of oil thieves, which have persistently inflicted detrimental effects on both the local environment and the nation’s oil production output.
According to Air Commodore Edward Gabkwet, the Airforce Spokesman, in a Statement dated 12th August 2023, building upon prior reconnaissance missions, NAF aircraft operating under Operation Delta Safe undertook air interdiction operations on August 11, 2023, targeting an illegal refining site southwest of Bille, a coastal town situated in the Degema Local Government Area (LGA) of Rivers State. Simultaneously, on the same day, aerial strikes were extended to a well-known camp associated with the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) in Orsumoghu, located within the Ihiala LGA of Anambra State.
Intelligence reports had indicated the presence of IPOB elements within makeshift encampments, indicating plans for an impending assault on innocent civilians. In response, the decision was made to engage these elements effectively, resulting in a successful strike that curbed their potential threat.
Likewise, similar air strikes were executed on the same day by the Air Component of Operation Hadin Kai, targeting a location approximately 1.5 kilometers east of Arra, a once-abandoned terrorist hideout adjacent to the Sambisa Forest. Earlier reconnaissance missions revealed the gathering of terrorists at this location, despite its previous clearance of terrorist activities six months prior. It was apparent that these militants had relocated from regions around Lake Chad due to relentless airstrikes carried out by NAF aircraft.
Consequently, the eastern area of Arra was assailed to dismantle the terrorists’ presence and prevent them from using it as a base of operations. Subsequent footage depicted the aftermath of the strike, revealing the destruction of structures and the neutralization of numerous terrorists, while surviving militants were observed dispersing in disarray. Ultimately, their capacity to target both friendly forces and innocent civilians was severely compromised, contributing to the enhancement of overall security.
