Afenifere Calls for President Tinubu’s Impeachment Over Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway Contract
A faction of the pan-Yoruba socio-political group, Afenifere, has urged the National Assembly to initiate impeachment proceedings against President Bola Tinubu. The call comes amid allegations of conflict of interest relating to the award of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway contract.
Oba Oladipo Olaitan, leader of the group, expressed strong condemnation in an interview with Saturday PUNCH following President Tinubu’s recent public acknowledgment of a partnership with Gilbert Chagoury, the contractor responsible for the project. The declaration was made during the inauguration of the 30-kilometre Phase 1, Section 1 of the coastal highway.
During the inauguration ceremony, President Tinubu praised the Chagoury-led Hitech Construction Company, describing the road as a “symbol of courage and commitment.” He notably referred to Chagoury as his “partner in daring,” stating, “It was tough for us… We came together to tame the Atlantic.”
This admission has sparked controversy, with critics accusing the President of breaching ethical standards by publicly associating himself with a contractor involved in a major federal project. Afenifere’s faction argues that such a relationship presents a clear conflict of interest, potentially compromising the integrity of the contract award process.
The group’s leader, Oba Olaitan, has appealed to lawmakers to take swift action to uphold transparency and accountability, emphasizing that the President’s conduct warrants formal investigation and possible impeachment to safeguard the nation’s democratic principles.
As the debate unfolds, the National Assembly faces mounting pressure to respond to the allegations and determine the appropriate course of action regarding President Tinubu’s involvement with the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway contract.
