In an effort to elevate discipline, regimentation, professionalism, and operational efficiency within the Nigerian Air Force (NAF), Air Marshal Hasan Abubakar, the Chief of Air Staff (CAS), presided over a Retreat on November 22, 2023, specifically designed for Air Warrant Officers (AWOs) and Regimental Sergeant Majors (RSMs) stationed across the nation. During the opening address, Air Marshal Abubakar underscored the pivotal role of mentorship within the NAF, emphasizing the importance of sharing knowledge, skills, and experiences among the highly experienced AWOs, RSMs, and other Senior-Non-Commissioned Officers (SNCOs). Expressing concern about the diminishing practice of mentorship within the Non-Commissioned Officers’ (NCO) cadre over time, the CAS urged AWOs and RSMs to revive this crucial culture in their respective units, highlighting their responsibility as impartial intermediaries between the Officers’ Cadre and the Other Ranks.

Further addressing the assembly, the CAS emphasized the critical role of AWOs and RSMs in maintaining and upholding the NAF’s high standards of discipline. Noting a concerning rise in indiscipline related to drug abuse, offenses related to sentry duties, and cases of Absence Without Leave (AWOL) across various units, Air Marshal Abubakar called for a reversal of this trend and highlighted the instrumental role AWOs and RSMs can play in curbing it. He urged them to establish consistent communication channels with their subordinates to address both personal and service-related issues impartially.

The CAS also stressed the importance of AWOs and RSMs taking ownership of service properties with the same dedication as personal items. Emphasizing the significance of regular cleaning, sanitation, and maintenance of NAF facilities, including buildings, hangars, and operational areas, he highlighted the influential role AWOs and RSMs can play in instilling a robust maintenance culture within their units. Addressing safety concerns, the CAS emphasized that the objectives outlined in the 2023 Safety Review Board (SRB) could only be achieved if all personnel assume responsibility for the safety of both operational and personal environments. He urged a relentless pursuit and internalization of a safety culture among airmen and airwomen, emphasizing consistent adherence to safety standards and regulations to prevent mishaps during operations and eliminate fire hazards within barracks.

Key highlights of the Retreat included presentations by AWOs and RSMs on activities within their respective Areas of Responsibility.
