Senate President Godswill Akpabio has credited President Bola Ahmed Tinubu with transforming a once “decayed” Nigeria into a renewed and hopeful nation through his democratic reforms and leadership.
During a joint session of the National Assembly to commemorate Democracy Day, Akpabio praised Tinubu as a seasoned fighter for democracy and a symbol of resistance who has now earned the trust of the Nigerian people.
He emphasized that Tinubu’s presence in parliament went beyond fulfilling a constitutional duty—it marked the realization of a democratic journey built on sacrifice and resilience.
“The National Assembly stands as the stronghold of democracy in any country,” Akpabio said. “Your presence here brings back memories of a long, courageous journey filled with struggle and an unshakable belief in democratic ideals.”
Addressing Tinubu as “our president, our compatriot, and a distinguished Senator forever,” Akpabio expressed pride in welcoming a leader who helped shape Nigeria’s democratic path.
“This chamber recognizes you not just as Nigeria’s president, but as one of the key architects of the democratic foundation we uphold today,” he said.
Akpabio also reminded the assembly that Democracy Day goes beyond political wins; it celebrates the Nigerian people’s unwavering commitment to peace and democratic governance over violence and authoritarianism.
“We are here not to lament past injustices, but to celebrate resilience,” he said. “Today is not about politicians’ victories, but about the Nigerian people’s enduring faith in democracy—a faith that has survived betrayals, braved tear gas, defied brutal losses, endured silencing, and consistently chosen ballots over bullets.”
