Cardinals Gather in Rome to Elect New Pope

All 133 voting Catholic cardinals have arrived in Rome ahead of the papal conclave. The Vatican confirmed their arrival on Monday.

This sets the stage for a secretive and crucial election. The conclave will determine Pope Francis’s successor. It officially begins Wednesday at 4:30 p.m. local time (1430 GMT). Cardinals will vote inside the iconic Sistine Chapel.

According to Vatican rules, voting remains completely secret. The process continues until one candidate earns a two-thirds majority. That rule ensures broad consensus among electors. It reflects the Church’s deep commitment to unity.

Pope Francis announced his resignation earlier this year. He cited serious health concerns. At 86, Francis’s decision shocked many Catholics worldwide. He became pope in 2013.

Now, attention turns to the future of the Church. The next pope will face major global challenges. Those include climate change, inequality, and clergy abuse scandals. The Church also faces growing debates on social issues.

Secrecy, Smoke Signals, and Global Focus

The 133 electors represent diverse nations and traditions. All are under the age of 80, per Church law. They were summoned to Rome through official Vatican protocols. Now, they enter total seclusion. Once voting begins, no outside communication is allowed. That rule preserves the integrity of the election. Black smoke signals a failed vote. White smoke means a pope has been chosen.

After a successful vote, the world hears “Habemus Papam”—“We have a pope.”

Vatican spokesman Matteo Bruni addressed reporters on Monday. He said the cardinals are ready to act with “prayer and discernment.”

The conclave draws international attention beyond religion. The pope also serves as a moral and diplomatic figure.

Observers are reflecting on Pope Francis’s legacy.

He championed the poor, migrants, and interfaith dialogue. Now, the Church stands at a crossroads. The conclave could bring either continuity or change.

The Vatican has not released more details yet. Gowever, the election may conclude within days.
