Lieutenant General Taoreed Lagbaja, the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), officially opened the Tukur Buratai (TYB) International Golf Resort and Country Club’s Clubhouse at the Shehu Musa Yar’adua Barracks in Asokoro, Abuja.
During the commissioning on Tuesday, November 14, 2023, the COAS, who also holds the position of Grand Patron of the Golf Resort and Country Club, underscored the significance of “Sound Administration” as a vital aspect of his Command Philosophy. He highlighted the commitment of the Nigerian Army (NA) under his leadership to deliberately enhance the welfare of its personnel and operational capabilities through pertinent development projects. These projects, he emphasized, would act as catalysts in building and propelling a combat-effective and lethal force.
General Lagbaja stressed the necessity of a well-appointed Golf Clubhouse for the NA, serving as a meeting point for golf enthusiasts and non-golfers to socialize. He noted that golf is rapidly gaining popularity within the NA, emphasizing that the perception of it being exclusive to an elite few is diminishing.
The COAS affirmed the Army Headquarters’ dedication to elevating the NA’s administrative standards by constructing new infrastructure and renovating existing ones to meet international benchmarks. He indicated that the inauguration marks the commencement of a new era in golfing within the NA, fostering camaraderie among troops, as well as esprit de corps among sister services and other security agencies. General Lagbaja expressed satisfaction that the Golf Course would soon host international tournaments, contributing to the growth of Nigeria’s tourism and hospitality industry. He reiterated the NA’s commitment to realizing the President’s pledge to ensure peace and stability in the country.
Major General Samson Jiya, the Club’s Captain, extended gratitude to the Grand Patron, TYB Golf Country Club management, and its members for their dedication and contribution to the golfing community. He affirmed that the Course would be a sanctuary for golfers seeking skill enhancement, social interactions, and the creation of enduring memories.
