The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has responded to the recent statement by the Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA), criticizing the Chief of Defence Staff’s (CDS) approach to the protracted crisis in Plateau State and other troubled areas in Nigeria.
In a press release, issued to Defence Correspondents by the Acting Director Defence Information, Brigadier General Tukur Gusau the DHQ clarified that the Fact-Finding Team, led by a retired senior military officer, was formed by CDS General Christopher Musa as part of a non-kinetic approach to resolving the crisis. This move came after the deployment of military assets, including highly trained intelligence personnel and special forces, to address the escalating violence and bring perpetrators to justice.
Chief of Army Staff Lieutenant General Taoreed Lagbaja, during his visit to Plateau State on January 27, 2024, issued specific directives to the troops to decisively handle those instigating troubles resulting in loss of lives and properties. Subsequently, intelligence-driven operations have led to the apprehension of key suspects who are currently undergoing interrogation.
The DHQ emphasized that the Fact-Finding Team’s mandate extends beyond Plateau State and covers other troubled regions in the country. The non-kinetic approach underscores the military’s commitment to resolving the crisis through diplomatic means.
In response to HURIWA’s criticism, the DHQ called on the human rights group to seek credible information on national security issues before engaging with the media. The DHQ accused HURIWA of being ill-informed and failing to research the military’s efforts to restore normalcy in troubled areas. It urged civil society organizations to responsibly use the media and avoid disseminating falsehoods that could create unnecessary tension.
The DHQ warned HURIWA of potential legal action if such misinformation persisted, emphasizing the importance of accurate reporting on national security matters. CDS General Christopher Gwabin Musa expressed gratitude for the support of Nigerians to the troops, highlighting their sacrifices to ensure peace in the nation. He expressed confidence in the troops’ ability to eradicate criminality not only in Plateau State but across the entire country.
