In a recent statement by Hon. Benjamin Okezie Kalu, the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, it was revealed that ongoing discussions are in progress to secure the release of Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB). The statement, conveyed by Kalu’s Chief Press Secretary Levinus Nwabughiogu, addressed the unfolding developments surrounding Kanu’s retrial ordered by the Supreme Court.
The incarceration of Nnamdi Kanu has led to widespread agitation, exemplified by the observed Sit-at-Home protests on Mondays in the southeast region. Speaking during the “South East Political Roundtable,” a current affairs radio program on FLO FM in Umuahia, Kalu emphasized the ongoing efforts to secure Kanu’s release while urging the youth of the southeast to discontinue the Sit-at-Home protests.
Kalu acknowledged the economic implications of the protests, noting that they are discouraging potential investors interested in contributing to the region’s development. He urged the youth to consider alternative non-violent approaches to address the challenges faced by the region.
During the virtual discussion, Kalu highlighted the gains of the recently unveiled Peace In South East Project (PISE-P) in Bende Local Government Area of Abia State. He called upon those wielding arms to embrace a non-kinetic approach advocated by the initiative to address security challenges and other grievances.
Kalu, while urging support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s government, emphasized the president’s interest in the development of the southeast. He noted that efforts were being made behind the scenes to secure Nnamdi Kanu’s release, emphasizing a detailed strategy that does not involve violence.
Addressing the need for unity and peace, Kalu called for an end to the Sit-at-Home protests and stressed the importance of supporting the Peace In South East Project. He commended the governors of the five eastern states for their support of PISE-P, emphasizing the non-political nature of the project focused on community service.
Responding to concerns about potential clashes of interest between PISE-P and Ohaneze Ndi Igbo, Kalu clarified that there was no such conflict. He revealed that the project had the full support of Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, the President-General of Ohaneze Ndi Igbo, highlighting the collaborative efforts aimed at fostering peace and unity in Igbo land.
