The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has openly ridiculed recent calls for a Yoruba Nation by certain factions in the South West, branding the agitation as “laughable.” Additionally, the DHQ sounded an alarm, cautioning that terrorists and their supporters were plotting to discredit the military following its crackdown on insurgents.

The DHQ’s statement comes in the wake of an incident where Yoruba Nation agitators, adorned in military attire, attempted to take control of the Oyo State secretariat and State House of Assembly last Saturday. Despite engaging security forces, the agitators were subdued, resulting in the arrest of 29 suspects.

Addressing the media in Abuja, Maj. Gen. Edward Buba, the Director of Defence Media Operations, expressed disdain for the Yoruba Nation agitation, suggesting that it further exposes the self-inflicted nature of the country’s security challenges.

Gen. Buba remarked, “The agitation of IPOB in the South East has proven to be for self-aggrandizement. Then, the call for a Yoruba Nation is laughable. All these buttress how our security situation is self-inflicted in the country.”

He emphasized that such actions contravene the constitution and are unacceptable, warning that individuals or groups resorting to arms against the government would face severe military repercussions.

The DHQ’s stern stance underscores its commitment to upholding constitutional order and maintaining national security. The dismissal of the Yoruba Nation agitation as “laughable” signals the military’s firm opposition to any attempts to destabilize the country’s unity and sovereignty.
