The Police Service Commission (PSC) has given its approval for the dismissal of three senior police officers due to their involvement in misconduct and abuse of office. Additionally, nine other officers, including a Commissioner of Police, have been demoted in rank.

These decisions were made during the 21st Plenary Meeting of the PSC, which commenced on July 6th, 2023, at the Corporate Headquarters in Jabi, Abuja. The meeting was chaired by retired Justice Clara Bata Ogunbiyi, CFR, former Justice of the Supreme Court, who represented the Judiciary in the Commission in the absence of Chairman Dr. Solomon Arase, CFR, retired Inspector General of Police. Dr. Arase, addressing the members via Zoom, expressed his appreciation for their diligent handling of disciplinary matters and reiterated his commitment to ensuring that no officer’s career progression is hindered.

Furthermore, the Commission ordered the compulsory retirement of an Assistant Commissioner of Police and directed the refund of all erroneously paid entitlements to the said officer. It also granted a posthumous promotion to the late Inspector Ifeanyi Oroke, recognizing his acts of gallantry by promoting him to the next rank of ASP 11. Additionally, Inspector Augustina Oko, who was previously dismissed, was reinstated with effect from the date of her dismissal.

The Commission also imposed the punishment of severe reprimand on 16 officers, while another 18 officers received reprimands. Letters of warning were instructed to be issued to two other officers as well.

In an earlier decision, the Commission approved the adjustment of the promotion date to the rank of Assistant Commissioner of Police for ACP Woke Iheanyi Kingsley and the reinstatement of CSP Anaele Samuel Onuoha in compliance with a court judgment.

The 21st Plenary Meeting of the Commission will reconvene on Tuesday, July 11th, 2023.
