DSS Warns Against Planned Nationwide Protest, Cites Risk of Violence and Anarchy

The Department of State Services (DSS) has issued a warning regarding a planned nationwide protest against economic hardship in Nigeria. The agency disclosed on Thursday that it has identified the sponsors behind the protest and urged them to reconsider, arguing that the demonstration is not in the country’s best interest.

In a press statement signed by Dr. Peter Afunanya, Director of Public Relations and Strategic Communications, and released to Vanguard, the DSS expressed concerns that the protest could be hijacked by elements intending to incite chaos and extreme violence. The statement further alleged that the true objective of the protest organizers is to facilitate a regime change, particularly targeting the central government.

“The DSS has monitored the discussions surrounding planned protests in various parts of the country, initiated by individuals and groups who have yet to publicly declare themselves as leaders of this movement,” the statement read. “While peaceful protest is a democratic right, the Service has confirmed a sinister plan by some elements to infiltrate the protest and use it as a platform to instigate chaos and extreme violence. The intention behind the protest appears to be politically motivated, aimed at discrediting the federal and sub-national governments, making them appear ineffective, and turning public opinion against them.”

The DSS stated that it has identified the sources of funding, sponsors, and collaborators involved in the protest planning. However, rather than resorting to aggressive measures, the agency has employed non-kinetic and conflict resolution strategies, including moral suasion and stakeholder engagement, to dissuade the organizers from pursuing their objectives.

“Given these findings, the Service advises all protest groups to avoid any actions that could lead to rage, anarchy, and destruction,” the statement continued. “Despite efforts by the government at various levels to address the economic concerns, we urge the potential protesters to engage peacefully with the authorities and avoid violence, which only leads to the destruction of lives and property and distracts from governance.”

The DSS called on leaders from various sectors, including industry, labor unions, student associations, youth leaders, civil society, religious organizations, and political figures, to refrain from participating in or supporting any orchestrated violence. Parents, guardians, traditional and academic leaders are also encouraged to advise against involvement in the protest.

“The Service, in collaboration with other security and law enforcement agencies, will take all necessary measures to maintain peace and order,” the DSS concluded. “We urge everyone to contribute to building a nation without conflict or discord.”
