Edo Governor Calls for United Support from South-South Monarchs for Tinubu’s 2027 Re-Election
Benin City, Nigeria – In a strategic move to bolster national unity and progress, Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has urged traditional rulers in the South-South region to throw their full weight behind President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s bid for re-election in 2027. Describing the President’s second term as essential for the country’s stability, Okpebholo emphasized the need for unwavering support from these influential figures.
The appeal was delivered during a high-profile meeting at the Government House in Benin City, where Governor Okpebholo hosted members of the South-South Monarchs Forum. The gathering underscored the pivotal role of traditional institutions in Nigeria’s development, particularly in promoting unity and addressing security challenges.
In his address, Okpebholo highlighted the shared regional pride in having a “son of the South-South” as President. He stressed the importance of solidarity, stating, “South-South should speak with one voice because we have our son as President. He deserves our total support to complete the good work he has started.” The Governor praised Tinubu’s administration for its bold economic reforms, including tax policies and enhanced federal allocations to states, which he said are paving the way for meaningful development at the grassroots level.
Okpebholo also commended the President’s efforts to combat insecurity, a pressing issue across Nigeria. He called on the monarchs to leverage their deep-rooted influence and presence in local communities to assist with intelligence gathering. “Traditional rulers are strategically positioned to foster peace and provide vital information that can help curb threats,” he noted, positioning them as key partners in national security initiatives.
Beyond the call for political backing, the Governor reaffirmed his administration’s dedication to empowering traditional institutions. He promised to collaborate with other governors in the Southern region to ensure the dignity and relevance of royal fathers in governance. This commitment reflects a broader vision of integrating cultural leadership into modern state affairs, fostering a sense of inclusion and respect for Nigeria’s diverse heritage.
The South-South Monarchs Forum responded positively to the Governor’s remarks. Speaking on behalf of the group, the Vice Chairman and Orodje of Okpe Kingdom, His Royal Majesty Major General Felix Mujakperuo (rtd), expressed admiration for Okpebholo’s leadership. He specifically highlighted the Governor’s efforts in defending the dignity of the Oba of Benin and promoting peace in Edo State. “We congratulate you on your well-deserved electoral victory and assure you of our full support for your administration,” Mujakperuo said. He further pledged the Forum’s backing for President Tinubu’s re-election, signaling a unified front for the 2027 polls.
This engagement comes at a time when Nigeria faces economic uncertainties and security threats, making the alliance between political leaders and traditional rulers more crucial than ever. As the nation gears up for future elections, such collaborations could play a significant role in shaping public discourse and policy direction.
Governor Okpebholo’s call echoes a growing sentiment among regional leaders that sustained support for the current administration is vital for long-term stability. With traditional rulers holding sway over public opinion in their communities, their endorsement could prove instrumental in mobilizing grassroots support for Tinubu’s agenda. As discussions continue, stakeholders will be watching closely to see how these commitments translate into tangible actions.
