Egbetokun Presents Policing Strategy to Rebuild Public Trust in Meeting with Strategic Police Commanders

The Acting Inspector-General of Police, Dr. Olukayode Adeolu Egbetokun, NPM, PhD, has unveiled a comprehensive set of new policing strategies for the Nigeria Police Force. The IGP presented these strategies today, Friday, June 23, 2023, during the inaugural conference with Strategic Police Managers.

The conference brought together members of the Force Management Team, Assistant Inspectors-General of Police, Commissioners of Police, and other Heads of Police Formations at the Goodluck Ebele Jonathan Peacekeeping Hall, Force Headquarters, Abuja.

The key components of the IGP’s policing vision include the preservation of the legal framework governing the Nigeria Police Force, combating crimes and criminality through the establishment of a specialized Quick Intervention Squad comprising highly trained Police Mobile Force personnel skilled in crisis de-escalation and violent crime reduction strategies.

The new strategy also emphasizes leveraging cutting-edge tools, data analytics, and intelligence networks to enhance the Police’s human and technical intelligence gathering capabilities. Furthermore, it highlights the importance of strengthening inter-agency collaboration.

In addition, the IGP’s vision focuses on enhancing the Police training curriculum with a special emphasis on attitudinal and behavioral changes. It also includes improved welfare measures and the revival of the Police Officer Support Unit (POSU) within the Police Medical Services to provide confidential support and counseling for all police officers.

To motivate and encourage dedicated personnel, a new Recognition and Reward system will be implemented. The IGP also emphasizes community policing through active engagement with the Police Community Relations Committee (PCRC) and the establishment of a Citizens Engagement Focus Group.

Meanwhile, the IGP has appointed CP Olatunji Disu as his Principal Staff Officer. CP Disu has an impressive educational background, including a B.A. in English (Education), PGD in International Relations and Strategic Studies, MSc. in Public Administration, Advanced Diploma in Forensic Investigation & Criminal Intelligence, and MSc. in Criminology, Security & Legal Psychology.

He has received training both within and outside Nigeria and is a member of several professional bodies. CP Disu brings a wealth of experience from his service in various administrative, investigative, and operational roles within the Force, including his tenure as Commander of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) Lagos and DCP Intelligende Response Team (IRT), FIB, Abuja.

The IGP has also appointed other key aides, including CSP Ganiyu Adebowale as Personal Assistant (PA-IGP), SP Adewale Ajibuwa as Chief Protocol Officer (CPO-IGP), DSP Sheriff Lawal as Aide-de-Camp (ADC-IGP), and DSP Olawole Ogunwusi J. as Chief Security Officer (CSO-IGP).

The Inspector-General of Police assures citizens that under his command, the Nigeria Police Force will exemplify excellence, integrity, and compassion. He urges citizens to collaborate with the Police to shape a future where justice prevails, the vulnerable find solace, and citizens can go about their lawful activities without fear of insecurity or harassment—a future where every citizen can genuinely trust in the power of law enforcement.
