FCT Minister Nyesom Wike Dismisses PDP’s Chances in 2027 Presidential Race

Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has declared that his former party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), stands no chance of securing victory in the 2027 presidential election. Speaking during his monthly media engagement with journalists in Abuja on Monday, Wike cautioned that internal selfish agendas could further undermine the party’s prospects and lead to its downfall.

Wike underscored the importance of effective leadership, warning that any lapses in this area would have severe repercussions for the PDP. He referenced recent political shifts, such as the Governor of Delta State and his predecessor joining the All Progressives Congress (APC) and backing President Bola Tinubu, questioning whether such moves were inherently wrong.

“Why is there no outcry when the PDP Board of Trustees (BoT) chairman, who serves as the party’s moral guide, endorsed Alex Otti—a Labour Party governor—for a second term?” Wike asked. He argued that opposition parties like the PDP should not tolerate impunity, which is typically associated with ruling parties. Instead, he urged the PDP to focus on organizing effectively to challenge for power, rather than pursuing personal vendettas. “How many efforts have they made to woo key figures? Instead, they’re fixated on me. My only ‘offense’ is serving as a minister in the APC administration,” he stated.

Highlighting his own track record, Wike pointed out that as a former governor, he did not back the PDP’s presidential candidate in the last election yet still delivered a complete sweep for the party in governorship, state assembly, and National Assembly races in his state. “I’m the only one who achieved that—let any other governor claim the same,” he boasted.

Wike further warned that the PDP’s internal divisions, if left unaddressed, could escalate and backfire spectacularly. “You’ve yet to win an election, but you’re already sidelining people. Don’t repeat the same tactics from 2023; that kind of cunning won’t work,” he advised, calling on party leaders to rethink their strategies to avoid further setbacks.
