President Bola Tinubu has assured Nigerian workers of an imminent unveiling of a new “living wage” by the Federal Government, addressing concerns raised during the International Workers’ Day celebration at the Eagle Square on Wednesday.

Represented by Vice-President Kashim Shettima, Tinubu commended Nigerian workers for their dedication to the nation’s peace, progress, and development. He revealed that despite efforts, the tripartite committee on a new minimum wage failed to reach a consensus before May Day.

Tinubu recounted the establishment of the 37-member Tripartite Committee on Minimum Wage by the Federal Government on January 30th, 2024, with a mandate to propose a national minimum wage aligned with current economic conditions. He acknowledged the committee’s collaboration with labor leaders in diligently working towards this goal but noted the absence of a consensus in their last meeting.

Addressing the workers’ concerns, Tinubu assured them that their worries would soon be resolved with the unveiling of the new living wage. Notably, organized labor has been advocating for a new living wage of N615,000 for workers.

While expressing openness to the concept of a living wage over a minimum wage, Tinubu emphasized the government’s commitment to considering the committee’s suggestion. He urged workers to trust his administration, highlighting the importance of industrial harmony and peaceful coexistence for national growth and development.

Tinubu appealed to workers to join hands in shaping the nation’s destiny towards greatness, emphasizing that every government initiative aims to transform Nigeria into a nation capable of providing for its people. He called upon workers to continue using the power of the labor movement for the greater good of the nation, fostering harmony and cooperation.

In conclusion, Tinubu extended heartfelt congratulations on the successful Workers’ Day celebration, wishing all workers joyous festivities as they contribute to the nation’s prosperity and progress.
