Federal Government’s Group Life Assurance Payment Earns Praise from Nigerian Army; COAS Applauds Presidential Initiative

The Nigerian Army (NA) has expressed its appreciation to the Federal Government of Nigeria for its directive to settle the outstanding Group Life Assurance payments owed to the families of fallen Nigeria Army personnel who made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty.

Lieutenant General Taoreed Lagbaja, the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), conveyed this commendation during the opening ceremony of the Chief of Army Staff Combined Second and Third Quarters Conference held at the Army Headquarters Command Officers’ Mess 1 in Asokoro, Abuja, on September 12, 2023.

In his address, General Lagbaja underscored the indispensable role of sound administration and the welfare of troops in the successful execution of the NA’s operations. He affirmed that the well-being of troops and their families would remain a top priority during his tenure, emphasizing the NA’s commitment to consolidating existing welfare initiatives and programs. These efforts include the provision of suitable living accommodations for personnel, efficient medical care for the injured, and ongoing support for the widows and next-of-kin of fallen heroes.

Furthermore, General Lagbaja charged field commanders with the responsibility of ensuring the proper maintenance of equipment and platforms under their command. This initiative aims to prolong the lifespan of these assets and maximize the nation’s investments.

The COAS elaborated on the purpose of the conference, highlighting its role as a platform to comprehensively review the NA’s administrative, training, logistics, and operational activities. Additionally, it serves as an opportunity to revisit decisions made during the COAS First Quarter Conference of 2023.

General Lagbaja celebrated the operational achievements of the NA, citing the effectiveness of Operation HADIN KAI in the North East, which has significantly curtailed Boko Haram and other terrorist activities in the region. He also noted the successes of Operations HADARIN DAJI and WHIRL PUNCH in addressing banditry and insurgency in the North West and North Central regions. Furthermore, Operation UDO KA in the South East has been instrumental in curtailing criminal activities among dissident groups.

The COAS urged all NA personnel to maintain determination in thwarting criminal elements’ freedom of action. He emphasized that the despicable acts of these individuals have only reinforced the NA’s resolve to intensify efforts against them.

General Lagbaja expressed his gratitude to the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, for his strategic guidance and trust in the leadership of the Armed Forces of Nigeria. He reiterated the NA’s unswerving loyalty and commitment to the Constitution of the Federal Republic.

A highlight of the conference was the presentation of eight Toyota Hilux Vehicles to Army Warrant Officers (AWO) who have reached the pinnacle of their distinguished military careers, recognizing their exceptional service and dedication to the Nigerian Army.
