The Federal Government has taken decisive action against the immediate past Governor of Kogi State, Yahaya Bello, by placing him on a watchlist to prevent his escape from the country amidst allegations of money laundering totaling N80 billion.
In a circular dated April 18, 2024, issued by the Nigerian Immigration Service and signed by Assistant Comptroller of Immigration DS Umar, on behalf of Comptroller-General Kemi Nandap, the government alerted the police and the Department of State Services (DSS) to effect the former governor’s arrest.
This development comes shortly after the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) declared Bello wanted in connection with the alleged money laundering case. The EFCC made the declaration via its official Facebook page after encountering difficulties in arresting him in Abuja on Wednesday.
Disagreements surfaced between the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), and Abdulwahab Mohammed (SAN), who represent Bello, regarding the attempted arrest by the EFCC.
The circular issued by the NIS, addressed to the DSS and the police, includes details such as the name, nationality, and passport number of the former Governor (B50083321). It outlines the charges Bello faces, including conspiracy, breach of trust, and money laundering, which are being prosecuted before the Federal High Court Abuja.
In the circular, Nandap stated, “I am directed to inform you that the above-named person has been placed on the watch list. Suffice to mention that the subject is being prosecuted before the Federal High Court Abuja for Conspiracy, Breach of Trust and Money Laundering.”
The circular further instructs that if Bello is sighted at any entry or exit point, he should be promptly arrested and referred to the Director of Investigation, with contact details provided for further action.
The government’s swift action underscores its commitment to combating corruption and ensuring that individuals implicated in financial crimes face the full consequences of their actions.
