FG Rejects Claims of Bias in Appointments, Insists on Federal Character Adherence

Abuja, Nigeria – The Federal Government has vehemently denied accusations of bias in its recent appointments to various federal agencies and parastatals, asserting that all appointments were made in strict adherence to the federal character principle enshrined in the Nigerian constitution.

This denial comes amidst growing public scrutiny and criticism from certain quarters alleging regional and ethnic favoritism in the distribution of government positions.

However, in a statement issued by Segun Imohiosen, Director of Information and Public Relations for Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, the government described such allegations as unfounded and misleading.

“The statement reads, “The Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (OSGF) wishes to address recent insinuations circulating, particularly on social media, regarding the composition of Federal appointments.

He further explained that contrary to the insinuations of bias, the government employs a rigorous process that takes into account not just merit and competence, but also the need to reflect the geographical spread and diversity of Nigeria.

“We understand the importance of inclusivity and fairness. The aim is to build a public service that truly represents Nigeria, not just a select few,” he emphasized.

“The Government categorically refutes claims of lopsidedness and emphasizes its unwavering commitment to the principles of fairness, equity, and national unity.

All appointments are made in strict adherence to the federal character principle, as enshrined in Section 14 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as altered).

“It is notable to mention that His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, believes strongly in the unity of Nigeria and is guided by the ideals of fairness and tenets of justice in all appointments.

This Administration is dedicated to ensuring that all regions and demographics of the country are adequately represented in its institutions and agencies.”

The government urged the public to disregard what it described as “tendentious and unfounded allegations” aimed at inciting disunity.

It also encouraged Nigerians to rely on official channels for credible information regarding federal appointments.

The statement added, “The Government remains steadfast in its pursuit of a prosperous, united and equitable Nigeria, in line with the Renewed Hope Agenda of this Administration.”

The government further directed that the public contact the OSGF for inquiries, which it noted is the official custodian of records relating to federal appointments.

He challenged critics to present concrete evidence of systemic bias, emphasizing that the government maintains detailed records of appointments and is open to constructive dialogue on the matter.

“We are not infallible, and we are always open to feedback. But blanket accusations of bias without substantiation are unhelpful and serve only to sow discord,” he added.

The spokesperson also highlighted government initiatives aimed at ensuring equal opportunities for Nigerians from all regions, including educational programs and skill development initiatives designed to enhance the employability of citizens from historically disadvantaged areas.

Despite the government’s strong denial, concerns about equitable representation in federal appointments remain a persistent issue in Nigeria’s political landscape.

Civil society groups and opposition voices continue to call for greater transparency and accountability in the appointment process, urging the government to release detailed data on the regional and ethnic distribution of positions in federal agencies.

The debate over federal character and equitable representation is likely to continue, underscoring the delicate balance Nigeria strives to maintain between meritocracy and national unity in its public service.

The Federal Government’s insistence on adherence to the federal character principle signals its commitment to addressing these concerns, even as scrutiny from the public and opposition remains intense.
