Former Governor of Benue State, Chief Samuel Ortom, Suspends Elaborate 64th Birthday Activities in Solidarity with Attack Victims
Makurdi, Benue State (Nigeria) – In a show of empathy amid escalating violence in the region, former Governor of Benue State, Chief Samuel Ortom, has announced the cancellation of all elaborate celebrations planned for his 64th birthday.
The decision comes as a direct response to the ongoing attacks that have claimed numerous lives and displaced thousands in the state.
Ortom, who served as governor from 2015 to 2023, was set to mark his birthday on April 23 with events including a public reception and community gatherings.
However, in a statement released by his media aide, he described the move as a “necessary act of solidarity” with the victims of recent violent incidents. “At a time when our people are grieving and seeking safety, it is inappropriate to proceed with festivities,” Ortom said in the statement. “My heart goes out to the families affected, and I urge all leaders to prioritize peace and security.”
Benue State has been plagued by a surge in attacks attributed to clashes between farmers and armed herders, as well as banditry and other criminal activities.
According to local reports, at least 50 people have been killed in the past month alone, with many more injured or forced to flee their homes.
The violence has drawn national attention, with human rights groups calling for immediate intervention from federal authorities.
Ortom’s gesture has been praised by civil society organizations and political figures in the state. The Benue State chapter of the Nigerian Bar Association commended the former governor for his “leadership by example,” emphasizing that such actions could inspire broader efforts to address the crisis.
Meanwhile, the current Governor, Hyacinth Alia, has not yet commented on Ortom’s announcement but has previously vowed to enhance security measures in the affected areas.
This development underscores the deepening humanitarian crisis in Benue, where residents continue to demand urgent action from the government.
As the state grapples with these challenges, Ortom’s decision serves as a reminder of the human cost of the ongoing conflicts and the need for collective solidarity in times of adversity.
