In a recent engagement with the 2023 awardees of the Future Africa Leaders Foundation, former Nigerian President Chief Olusegun Obasanjo sounded a warning bell regarding the looming debt crisis in Africa. Obasanjo, who played a pivotal role in securing debt relief for Nigeria in 2003, declared that there is no viable option for the next generation of Africans to escape the burden of the continent’s substantial debts.
During the discussion, Obasanjo, represented by his Special Assistant on Media, Kehinde Akinyemi, emphasized the critical nature of the debt issue. Drawing from his experience, he highlighted the challenges faced by previous administrations in effectively managing the debt relief obtained, making it nearly impossible for future leaders to repeat such a feat. The former president characterized these debts as a trap that no individual or nation should fall into, emphasizing their detrimental impact on any economy.
Addressing the leadership crisis on the continent, Obasanjo identified leadership as the primary challenge faced by Africa. He stated that future generations would have no choice but to grapple with the current debt obligations incurred by different countries across the continent. Obasanjo commended Pastor Chris Oyakhilome’s efforts in nurturing future leaders and expressed the need for more individuals like him to tackle the leadership crisis facing Africa.
During a question-and-answer session, Obasanjo outlined the qualities of a leader, emphasizing the importance of setting good examples, making bold and courageous decisions, acknowledging mistakes, learning from them, and having a realistic vision.
In a related development, Obasanjo, during the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) Ogun State 5th Thanksgiving service held at the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library, expressed optimism about the country’s socio-economic situation improving in the next four years through prayers and thanksgiving. Acknowledging the current challenges faced by Nigeria, he encouraged continuous gratitude for the mercy that has been bestowed upon the nation. Obasanjo, surrounded by notable figures including Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun, former Governor Sen. Gbenga Daniel, and business mogul Chief Adebutu Kessington, emphasized the importance of thanking God in all situations.
In their tributes, the attendees eulogized Obasanjo, recognizing him not only as a leader in Nigeria but also as a global phenomenon.
