Governor Alex Otti Denies claims of wanting to join APC

Abia State Governor Alex Otti has dismissed rumours suggesting he plans to defect from the Labour Party (LP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), describing the speculation as unfounded.

Several defections in Delta State strengthened the rumour and raised eyebrows across the political scene. Former Governor Ifeanyi Okowa and Governor Sheriff Oborevwori recently joined the APC in a surprise move. They said they defected to “connect Delta to Aso Rock” and strengthen ties with federal power.

During an interview on Arise Television, Otti laughed off claims that one must join the ruling party to stay relevant.

I don’t need to decamp to be close to the centre. In fact, I am closer to the centre than some of those who defected,” he said.

He added that political loyalty should be anchored on principles, not convenience. “President Bola Tinubu remained with his parties — from AD to AC to ACN — before the APC. If he was jumping ship, he wouldn’t have become President. Sometimes, you need to stand for something,” Otti stated.

Governor Alex Otti confirmed his loyalty to the Labour Party despite rising political speculation. However, he admitted concerns about the party’s future due to ongoing internal leadership conflicts. I am not God. I can’t predict what happens if there’s no LP tomorrow,” he said.

Governor Otti’s political journey includes time with the PDP, APGA, and APC. He won the 2023 governorship election under the Labour Party.
