The House of Representatives Committee on Ecological Funds has committed to transforming the existing narrative into a more transparent and sanitized system. Chairman Aminu Jaji made this pledge during the committee’s inaugural meeting in Abuja.
Jaji assured that the committee’s role would extend beyond the conventional oversight functions to ensure a thorough overhaul of the system. He mentioned that the committee has received over 50 requests from members seeking solutions to ecological challenges in their respective states.
Expressing concern, Jaji noted that some individuals are exploiting ecological projects for personal gain and emphasized the need to curtail such practices. He articulated the committee’s intent to conduct a comprehensive needs assessment across all 36 states before disbursing funds for ecological projects. This approach, he believed, would lead to a transformation in the prevailing narrative.
Jaji urged the committee to prioritize addressing ecological challenges like desertification in the north and erosion in the South East while encouraging innovative solutions.
Furthermore, the committee committed to collaborating with all stakeholders, including members of the previous committee, to address ecological challenges in the country effectively. Honorable Julius Pondi, a committee member who also chairs the Committee on Environment, commended the leadership for appointing technocrats to the Ecological Funds Committee and emphasized the importance of the chairman’s firm decision-making for achieving desired results. Other committee members expressed their dedication to working alongside the chairman to usher in a new era by purifying the system.
