During the second plenary session of the Tenth House of Representatives, Speaker Tajudeen Abbas made several important announcements regarding the composition of committees and the smooth functioning of the Green Chamber in the National Assembly.
These measures were taken to ensure the effective take-off of the 10th Session. Speaker Abbas unveiled seven Special Committees, each assigned with specific responsibilities.
The Selection Committee, chaired by Speaker Abbas himself, includes Deputy Speaker Rep. Benjamin Kalu as the Deputy Chairman. The committee’s membership will be drawn from each state of the federation, as well as the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
Rep. Khadija Buka Abba-Ibrahim (APC, Yobe) was appointed as the Chairperson of the Media and Publicity Committee, with Rep. Ikenga Ugochinyere (PDP, Imo) serving as the Deputy Chairperson. Their roles will involve managing and promoting public awareness and engagement with the activities of the House.
The Legislative Agenda Committee will be led by Rep. Julius Ihonvbere (APC, Edo). This committee will play a crucial role in setting the legislative priorities and goals for the House of Representatives.
The Rules and Business Committee will be chaired by Rep. Igariwey Iduma Enwo (PDP, Ebonyi). This committee will focus on establishing rules and procedures for the House, as well as managing its day-to-day business operations.
Rep. Wale Raji (APC, Lagos) has been entrusted with the responsibility of chairing the Welfare Committee. This committee will oversee the well-being and welfare of the members of the House of Representatives.
The Ethics and Privileges Committee, tasked with upholding the ethical standards and privileges of the House, will be headed by Rep. Tunji Olawuyi (APC, Kwara).
Rep. Danjuma Hassan has been appointed as the Chairperson of the Internal Security Committee, which will focus on matters concerning the security and safety of the House and its members.
Following these announcements, the House of Representatives adjourned its plenary session until July 4. The Special Committees were given a mandate to work diligently during the break to ensure the smooth operation of the House when it reconvenes.
