In a poignant valedictory session held today, the House of Representatives paid tribute to the late former Speaker, Umar Ghali Na’Abba, recognizing his significant contributions to the development of the legislative chamber and Nigeria as a whole.
The emotional plenary session, presided over by the current House Speaker, Hon. Tajudeen Abbas, saw lawmakers expressing their condolences and eulogizing the late Ghali Umar Na’Abba, who passed away on December 27, 2023, in Abuja after battling a prolonged illness.
Hon. Abbas, in his remarks, described the late speaker as the leader of a formidable team and acknowledged his immense contributions to the advancement of democracy in Nigeria. Na’Abba served as the Speaker of the House of Representatives from 1999 to 2003 and was widely recognized for his efforts in championing the autonomy of the legislature against an overbearing executive.
The House Speaker emphasized that Na’Abba’s tenure played a crucial role in ensuring the independence of the legislature. He stressed the importance of a democratic society where the legislative arm operates independently, articulating the will and aspirations of the people without undue influence.
Lawmakers, including former lawmaker from Adamawa State, Binta Garuba, Minority Leader of the house, Deputy Speaker Hon. Benjamin Kalu, and Hon. Julius Ihonvbere, all paid tribute to the late Na’Abba. They described him as a passionate, consistent, and disciplined democrat who made significant contributions to the development of the state and the nation.
Born on September 27, 1958, in Kano State, Na’Abba was a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). The valedictory session served as a platform for the House of Representatives to honor and remember the legacy of the late Speaker, acknowledging his enduring impact on the nation’s democratic journey.
