The House of Representatives, in a resolution on Tuesday, urgently appealed to the Federal Ministry of Environment and the Ecological Fund Office to take prompt action in assessing the erosion challenges in Fagge and other communities. They emphasized the need for executing erosion control and remediation projects in the affected areas.

The motion, presented by Hon. Muhammed Bello Shehu, representing Fagge Federal Constituency of Kano State, highlighted the threat to lives and properties posed by recent erosion and floods in several communities in Fagge. Hon. Shehu stressed the importance of immediate intervention to mitigate the damage caused by these natural disasters.

Addressing the House, Hon. Shehu underlined the significance of soil as a vital natural resource, supporting both living and non-living elements. However, he expressed concern that erosion is becoming a severe environmental catastrophe, causing destruction to physical infrastructure, properties, and hindering social and economic development.

Specifically, communities like Kwarin Gogau, Zungeru Road, Kwakwaci, Darirawa, Sabon Birni, Alfa, Tudun Bojuwa, Alasawa, Jaba, Kwarin Akuya, and Kwakwaci II in Fagge Local Government Area of Kano State are grappling with severe environmental degradation and poverty due to erosion and floods.

Recognizing the grave consequences of erosion and floods on various aspects of life, including industrial development, economy, food production, and the environment, the House urged the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to provide relief materials to the affected areas. Additionally, they called upon the Federal Ministry of Works and Housing to rehabilitate and reconstruct the affected roads.

To ensure the implementation of necessary interventions, the House mandated its committee on Appropriations (when constituted) to include the project in the 2024 Appropriation bill.
