The Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has directed the continuous barricade of all local government secretariats in Rivers State amid ongoing political tension. This measure comes in response to recent violent clashes and aims to ensure peace and order.

Addressing journalists in Abuja on Thursday, Egbetokun emphasized the need for the police presence at the secretariats until a court judgement resolves the controversy over the tenure of local government council chairmen in the state. He clarified that the police presence is intended to maintain peace and order, not to intimidate any parties involved.

“We are aware of the unfortunate incident a few days ago, which resulted in the loss of a police inspector. We are committed to preventing further violence and loss of life,” Egbetokun stated. “Our men will remain at the secretariats to ensure there is no breakdown of law and order while we await the court’s decision.”

The state police command had earlier announced the takeover of all council headquarters to prevent further bloodshed and maintain public order. This decision follows a deadly clash between supporters of the governor and those of his predecessor, the Federal Capital Territory Minister, Nyesom Wike, in the Omuma Local Government Area.

Egbetokun responded to allegations from the Police Service Commission (PSC) regarding the recruitment process, emphasizing the need to recruit individuals who are trainable and suitable for police duties. “We respect the power of the Commission to recruit for the police, but we must be careful with the kind of people we bring into the force. Our goal is to maintain a high standard of professionalism,” he said.

The Inspector General concluded by stating, “We are not fighting anyone. We are focused on ensuring the safety and security of Nigerians, and we remain committed to upholding the law.”
