IGP Establishes Schools Protection Squad and Unveils Standard Operating Procedure Handbook for Safe Schools Programme

In a significant move towards prioritizing the security and safety of schools and students, the Acting Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, has announced the formation of the Schools Protection Squad (SPS).

This proactive initiative aims to enhance security in educational institutions across the nation, safeguarding lives and property. As part of this comprehensive safety drive, the IGP is set to launch a comprehensive Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) handbook for the Safe Schools Programme.

The official launch and training event for the Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) handbook is scheduled to take place on August 9, 2023. This event will see the participation of 250 individuals representing various sectors, including the presidency, executive, judiciary, legislature, security agencies, civil society organizations, media, school administrators, unions, and other stakeholders.

The Schools Protection Squad (SPS) is a specialized unit within the Nigeria Police Force, tasked with developing policies and engaging relevant stakeholders to ensure the safety and protection of students, teachers, and school infrastructure. Equipped with the necessary assets and advanced training, the SPS will effectively respond to security challenges facing educational institutions.

The forthcoming launch of the Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) handbook for the Safe Schools Programme is a crucial aspect of this initiative. The handbook outlines best practices and guidelines for securing schools, conducting risk assessments, establishing emergency response protocols, and promoting collaboration among various stakeholders. This SOP will serve as a vital reference for educational authorities, security agencies, and other participants involved in the Safe Schools Programme, empowering them to take coordinated and effective measures to ensure the safety and protection of schools.

The Inspector-General of Police calls on all relevant stakeholders to actively participate in and support this initiative, emphasizing the importance of securing Nigeria’s educational assets.

With a united approach and collaborative efforts, a robust education system can be built, providing a secure and conducive learning environment for every child in the country. The IGP’s commitment to the safety and general well-being of educational institutions highlights the significance of this critical initiative in safeguarding the future of Nigeria’s youth
