IGP Initiates Comprehensive Insurance Policy to Enhance Police Welfare

In a significant move aimed at prioritizing the welfare of the Nigeria Police Force, the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, Ph.D., NPM, has announced the initiation of a comprehensive standard insurance policy for the Force. This proactive step is geared towards enhancing the well-being of police personnel and their families, emphasizing the commitment of the Police Force to quality service delivery.

To implement this robust insurance framework, the IGP convened a meeting with Mr. Sunday Thomas, the Commissioner for Insurance at the National Insurance Commission, at the Force Headquarters in Abuja on Tuesday, January 16th, 2024. The collaborative effort seeks to establish an insurance system tailored to the unique needs of Police Officers and their families.

In a noteworthy development, the Inspector-General of Police presided over the distribution of insurance benefits totaling N2,086,801,144.79k to seven hundred and eighty-five (785) families and Next of Kin of deceased officers,. This disbursement covered insurance policy years 2015/2016, 2017/2018, and 2021/2022 under the Group Life Assurance Policy, as well as the Inspector-General of Police Family Welfare Insurance Scheme for the year 2022/2023. The ceremony, held at the Force Headquarters on Thursday, January 18th, solidifies the Police Force’s commitment to supporting the families of officers who have sacrificed their lives in the line of duty.

Cumulatively, the Force Insurance Office has settled a total of Two Thousand, Five Hundred and Thirty-Three (2,533) insurance claims for deceased Police personnel, amounting to N6,013,043,326.51k between June 2023 and the present date.

The Inspector General of Police expressed gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, for prioritizing police welfare and ensuring the timely release of premiums for deceased officers. He reaffirmed his administration’s dedication to sustaining efforts that ensure prompt disbursement of insurance payments and other welfare benefits to deserving beneficiaries.
