The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has disclosed its intention to organize re-run and bye-elections in the early part of February 2024 to address vacancies in national and state constituencies nationwide.

During an extraordinary consultative meeting with political parties at the INEC Headquarters in Abuja on Monday, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, the Chairman of INEC, outlined the plan to conduct both re-run and bye-elections on the same day to adhere to the election schedule.

Prof. Yakubu specified that the re-run elections would take place in 34 constituencies, comprising one Senatorial District, 11 Federal Constituencies, and 22 State Assembly constituencies.

He also emphasized that political parties would need to conduct fresh primaries for the bye-elections within the legally stipulated timeframe.

Addressing ongoing litigations, the INEC Chairman assured that the commission would provide a comprehensive analysis of the petitions at the conclusion of legal proceedings, aiming for consequential reforms to enhance the conduct of future elections in the country.
