INEC Inaugurates Nine New Resident Electoral Commissioners

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has sworn in nine newly appointed Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs), augmenting the total number of serving RECs to twenty-three (23).

During the swearing-in ceremony at the INEC Headquarters in Abuja, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, the INEC Chairman, emphasized to the new RECs that overseeing elections is not only a significant responsibility but also a sacred duty. He urged them to adhere to the electoral legal framework, the code of conduct for RECs, and uphold good conscience in the discharge of their duties.

Professor Mahmood Yakubu also mentioned that the tenth REC-designate would take the oath next month, coinciding with the expiration of the tenure of the REC representing Akwa Ibom State, who is currently deployed to Delta State.

This historic occasion marks the first time in history that several INEC career officers have been appointed as RECs. Professor Mahmood urged them to swiftly immerse themselves in their roles.

Representing the newly sworn-in RECs, Barrister Oluwatoyin Babalola pledged loyalty to their duties while acknowledging the weight of their responsibilities as RECs in Nigeria.

The deployment of the new RECs is as follows: Abubakar Dambo Sarkin Pawa (Kebbi), Abubakar Ma’aji Ahmed (Borno), Dr. Anugbum Onuoha (Edo State), Ehimeakhe Shaka Isah (Akwa Ibom), Aminu Idris (Kaduna), Mohammed Sadiq Abubakar (Kwara), Barr. Oluwatoyin Babalola (Ondo), Olubunmi Omoseyindemi (Ekiti), and Shehu Wahab (Nasarawa).
