The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Wednesday issued Certificates of Return to the Adamawa Governor-Elect, Ahmadu Fintiri, and other National Assembly members-elect who emerged victorious in the April 18 supplementary elections. The presentation of the certificates took place at the INEC headquarters in Abuja on Tuesday.
During his acceptance speech, Governor Ahmadu Fintiri expressed his appreciation for INEC’s commitment to protecting democracy. He also vowed to take legal action against the Resident Electoral Commissioner who had announced fake results in collusion with security operatives.

Several lawmakers-elect also spoke with the press after receiving their certificates, commending INEC for conducting free and fair elections. They described their victories as a triumph for democracy.
The Majority Leader of the House of Representatives, Alhassan Doguwa, who won the Doguwa/Tudun Wada Federal Constituency election in Kano, hailed his victory as exceptional. However, he also noted that while INEC had done well in ensuring the success of the elections, there were still areas that needed improvement ahead of the 2023 general elections.
Similarly, Bashir Gorau, who won the Gada-Goronyo Federal Constituency election in Sokoto, described his victory as a hard-won battle against a ranking lawmaker who had been in the House for 16 years. The 33-year-old lawmaker-elect pledged to contribute to the development of laws that would promote youth empowerment.
In conclusion, the issuance of Certificates of Return to the newly elected officials represents a significant milestone in the democratic process of Nigeria. It is commendable that INEC has taken steps to ensure the success of the supplementary elections and maintain the integrity of the electoral process. The commitment of the newly elected officials to serving their constituencies is vital in promoting good governance and achieving sustainable development in the country.
