The Inspector General of Police Kayode Egbetokun, has officially commenced a training and sensitization program for state coordinators and divisional police officers within the Nigeria Police Force.

The initiative focuses on enhancing school protection and includes the commissioning of platforms, vehicles, and equipment to bolster security measures.

During the launch, IGP Egbetokun emphasized that the training program is designed to equip state coordinators and divisional police officers from all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) with comprehensive knowledge of the police’s role in the National Plan for Safe Schools in Nigeria. The overarching goal is to develop a strategic roadmap for collaboration with various stakeholders to secure learning environments for children.

“The safety of schools and educational establishments is a top priority for the Nigeria Police Force,” stated the IGP. He outlined the commitment to implementing strategies and mobilizing resources to counter threats facing students, staff, and educational infrastructure. The IGP highlighted the establishment of the Special Intervention Squad (SIS), an elite unit dedicated to swiftly countering criminal activities nationwide, particularly those targeting educational institutions.

Recognizing the importance of preventive measures and timely responses to incidents in schools, the police are committed to working in harmony with other security agencies, stakeholders, and communities. IGP Egbetokun stressed the unwavering dedication of the police to defend and protect lives, properties, and the freedoms of all Nigerians.

Expressing gratitude to the Federal Ministry of Finance, Budget, and National Planning for spearheading the “Financing Safe Schools National Plan,” IGP Egbetokun called on all citizens to collaborate with the police and other security bodies to safeguard schools. He emphasized that united efforts could significantly enhance national security.

Mrs. Halima Iliya, the National Coordinator of Financing Safe Schools, highlighted the importance of building the capacities of security personnel, schools’ host communities, stakeholders, students, and staff to align with the National Plan and fulfill their respective roles.

This initiative follows the formation of the Schools Protection Squad (SPS) on July 31, 2023, by IGP Egbetokun. The SPS, a specialized division within the Nigeria Police Force, is dedicated to formulating comprehensive policies and actively engaging stakeholders to ensure the safety and protection of students, teachers, and educational infrastructure.

In a subsequent move on August 20, 2023, IGP Egbetokun launched the Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) manual for the SPS and organized a workshop on the Safe Schools initiative for strategic police managers. The SPS has received necessary resources and training to effectively address security challenges facing educational institutions across Nigeria. The ongoing efforts underscore the police force’s commitment to proactive measures aimed at enhancing security and safety in schools nationwide.
