In a decisive move to safeguard national security and stability, the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has issued a directive to the Nigeria Police Force National Cybercrime Centre (NPF-NCCC) to intensify efforts in clamping down on individuals and groups disseminating fake news and engaging in cyberbullying.
The IGP’s directive came through a statement from Force headquarters titled, “NPF Speaks Tough Against Fake News, Cyber Bullying; As Police Condemns Circulation of Old Content to Discredit System.” In the statement, the police strongly condemned the spread of misinformation and cyberbullying, emphasizing their potential to undermine public trust in the diligent efforts of law enforcement officers in maintaining law and order.
The statement expressed concern over the malicious dissemination of old content and misinformation across various online platforms, characterizing such actions as a direct assault on the stability and safety of society. Fake news and cyberbullying, criminalized by the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc) Act, 2015, and other applicable laws, not only pose a threat to the reputation of the Force but also have the capacity to incite fear and discord within the country.
In response to this alarming trend, the Nigeria Police Force is ramping up efforts to combat fake news and cyberbullying through heightened vigilance and monitoring of online platforms. The IGP’s order to the NPF-NCCC seeks to target individuals and groups actively working to jeopardize national security through the spread of false information.
The directive mandates the prosecution of all perpetrators found spreading false information or engaging in cyberbullying to the fullest extent of the law. The Police will collaborate closely with relevant authorities to ensure swift and appropriate legal action against offenders.
The public is urged to exercise caution and discernment when consuming and sharing information online. The NPF calls for unity against the spread of misinformation and cyberbullying, recognizing the collective responsibility to uphold truth and integrity for the safety and well-being of the country.
Additionally, citizens are encouraged to report instances of fake news or cyberbullying to the Police for prompt investigation and necessary action. The Inspector General of Police emphasizes the importance of citizens’ cooperation in maintaining a secure and stable national environment.
