In a coordinated effort, a joint security team comprised of the Department of State Services (DSS), Nigerian Army, and Police successfully conducted operations in Nasarawa and Kogi States. On June 19, 2023, along the Abuja-Keffi Expressway in Keffi Local Government Area (LGA) of Nasarawa State, the team apprehended Abubakar Muhammad, also known as Abu Direba, a suspected gunrunner.
Spokesman of the DSS Dr. Peter Afunanaya in a Statement issued to Journalists on Thursday evening said the operation yielded the seizure of various dangerous items.


During the operation, the joint security team confiscated the following insidious items from Abu Direba’s possession:
a. Four Hundred and Eighty-Six (486) rounds of 7.62 x39mm calibre ammunition. b. Twenty-Two (22) primed Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs). c. The sum of Thirty-One Thousand, Five Hundred Naira (N31,500). d. One (1) Volkswagen Golf vehicle with registration number RBC202XA.


In another joint operation conducted in the early hours of June 22, 2023, the team raided the hideout of Kabir Bala, also known as Okwo, a notorious gang leader and former jailbreaker in Ejule, Ofu LGA of Kogi State. A fierce gun duel ensued between Okwo and his gang members, resulting in Okwo’s neutralization. However, the remaining gang members managed to escape the area. The operation led to the recovery of various items at the scene:
a. One AK47 rifle with three (3) fully loaded magazines. b. Six (6) locally fabricated weapons. c. Two (2) mobile phones. d. Assorted charms.
Meanwhile, the Department of State Services (DSS) has issued a warning urging the public to remain vigilant in light of the upcoming Eid celebrations, as reports indicate plans to attack worship and recreational centers during the festivities. The recovery of primed IEDs among the suspected terrorists highlights the seriousness of the threat.
Operators and patrons of public places, including markets and malls, are advised to exercise caution and report any suspicious movements or individuals to the relevant security agencies. The DSS emphasizes its commitment to partnering with sister security agencies to conduct proactive drills and frustrate the activities of criminals.
The successful operations conducted by the joint security team demonstrate the effectiveness of collaborative efforts in combating crime and maintaining peace and security in Nasarawa and Kogi States.
