The Kebbi State Government has launched a statewide drainage clearance operation to prevent flooding ahead of the rainy season.
Commissioner for Urban Development, Hayatu Bawa, announced on Friday in Birnin Kebbi that officials have already begun removing waste and blockages from key drainage systems to ensure smooth water flow during rainfall.
Bawa explained that the state initiated this effort to avert the overflow of rainwater that frequently causes flooding in residential areas.
“We are actively clearing drains to allow water to pass freely and avoid the destructive impact of floods,” he stated.
He praised Governor Nasir Idris for approving the project and for providing both financial and logistical support, which he said has made the operation efficient.
Bawa also warned residents against building on waterways and dumping refuse indiscriminately, stressing that such actions worsen flooding. He urged those living in flood-prone areas to relocate to safer, elevated zones.
“The government sees drainage clearance as one of the most effective ways to prevent flooding and urges residents to support the initiative,” Bawa said.
The Kebbi State Government reiterated its commitment to protecting the environment and safeguarding lives and property from seasonal floods.
