In response to the escalating cost of living crisis in Nigeria, Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has unveiled measures to ease the burden on citizens, including a reduction in the working days for public servants and initiatives to address food prices, transportation costs, and healthcare concerns.
During an ongoing media parley on economic hardship, Governor Sanwo-Olu disclosed that, starting next week, public servants at lower levels will be required to work three days a week, while those at levels 15-17 will have a reduced workweek of four days. The move is aimed at mitigating the impact of the cost of living crisis on the state’s workforce.
To address the rising cost of food, the governor announced plans to open Sunday Markets in 42 identified markets across Lagos State. These markets will offer discounted prices for food items, with a cap of N25,000 per purchase. Additionally, Governor Sanwo-Olu highlighted the construction of four food hubs and the identification of seven more locations in different local governments for the development of additional food hubs.
In a bid to alleviate transportation costs, a 25% reduction in fares for the State Public Transport system, including BRT, Train, and Ferry services, will take effect starting this weekend. The governor is also in discussions with various transport unions to explore options for reducing their fares.
Governor Sanwo-Olu acknowledged the challenges faced by pregnant residents and announced a free delivery service for expectant mothers across all government-owned hospitals in Lagos. He emphasized that the government is committed to ensuring accessible healthcare services for pregnant women.
Addressing the rising cost of drugs and pharmaceutical products, the governor pledged to provide rebates on specific drugs at state government hospitals.
In his statements, Governor Sanwo-Olu expressed empathy for the citizens and urged the private sector to play a role in alleviating the socio-economic challenges faced by Nigerians. He challenged private enterprises to replicate the supportive role they played during the COVID-19 pandemic in aiding the government’s efforts to ease the economic burden on citizens.
