Lagos Transport Policy Best in Nigeria

The Chartered Institute of Transport Administration of Nigeria (CIoTA) has named Lagos State as having the most advanced transport system in the country.

CIoTA President, Segun Obayendo, praised the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) on Wednesday for implementing an efficient and modern transit system. He made the remarks during the LASU-NACOLM Transport and Logistics Conference and Induction at Lagos State University, Ojo.

With the theme, *“Safety and Security in the Transportation Sector: The Way Forward,”* the conference brought together key stakeholders to discuss strategies for improving transportation nationwide.

Obayendo commended Lagos State for leading in transportation infrastructure and policy implementation. “I have visited all 36 states in Nigeria, and Lagos stands out,” he said. “The state has made bold decisions to lead in transportation. While other states appear inactive and helpless, Lagos continues to push forward.”

He specifically lauded LAMATA’s transition from smaller commercial vehicles (Korope) to Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) systems over the past five years. “Most people don’t realize the impact yet, but the results are beginning to show,” he noted.

Obayendo also reaffirmed CIoTA’s commitment to pushing for national transportation reforms. “We have led the advocacy for a national transport policy. Until now, Nigeria has lacked a clear transport vision, but the current administration recently passed a long-overdue transport policy bill,” he revealed.

CIoTA Registrar, Rasheed Ayelabegan, emphasized that safety and security remain fundamental to transportation and daily life.

Chairman of the CIoTA Lagos Chapter, Taiwo Salaam, added that the event aimed to equip stakeholders with practical safety tips to enhance transport operations and public awareness.
