The House of Representatives Committee on Environment has affirmed its commitment to combatting environmental degradation through a comprehensive approach involving legislative initiatives and policy revisions.
During the committee’s inaugural meeting in Abuja on Tuesday, Rep. Julius Pondi, the committee’s Chairman, declared the imperative of addressing the adverse impact of environmental degradation on both the ecosystem and human well-being.
In his opening address, Chairman Pondi highlighted the harsh conditions to which the environment has been subjected, resulting in detrimental consequences for constituents. He emphasized the urgent need for transformative changes across all sectors to bring about a positive shift.
Pondi assured that the committee would fulfill its mandate with a strong sense of responsibility, aligning its actions with the Legislative Agenda of the 10th Assembly. The pledge underscores the committee’s determination to enact impactful legislation to mitigate environmental challenges.
In a related development, the commissioning of the National Assembly library is scheduled for December 16, according to the Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Legislative Library, Research, and Documentation. During the committee’s meeting, the Chairman, expressing appreciation for the previous Assembly’s initiative, acknowledged the construction of a state-of-the-art library for Nigeria’s primary legislative body.
While the committee is relatively new, it also called for the provision of information that would enhance effective legislative engagement. The emphasis was on strengthening not only resolutions and bills passed by the National Assembly but also ensuring their enduring relevance.
