In a dramatic turn of events, 27 lawmakers from the Rivers State House of Assembly, originally elected under the banner of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), have officially defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC). This announcement was made during Monday’s plenary session at the Rivers Assembly Complex, under the leadership of Speaker Martin Amaehwule.

Sources indicate that the lawmakers are aligned with the Minister of Federal Capital Territory, Chief Nyesom Wike. The faction, led by Speaker Amaehwule, accused the state government, particularly Governor Fubara, of allegedly withholding funds designated for the Assembly’s management, leading to their decision to defect.

During the 87th plenary session in Port Harcourt, the factional members of the Rivers House of Assembly unanimously condemned the alleged financial deprivation imposed by the state government. The group, consisting of 27 legislators out of the total 32 in the House, justified their defection to the APC, citing divisions within the PDP.

After presenting letters signed by the defectors, Speaker Amaewhule directed the House clerk to convey their resolution to Governor Fubara and other relevant authorities. Amaewhule emphasized that the decision of the 27 lawmakers stems from their commitment to better serve the state.

In another development during the same plenary, the Rivers State Local Government (Amendment) Bill 2023 successfully passed its second reading, indicating ongoing legislative activities amid the political realignment within the assembly.
