In response to the tragic mistaken air strike in Tudun Biri, Kaduna State, where over 70 civilians lost their lives, the Defence Headquarters has announced that two officers involved will face a court martial for their actions.
Major General Edward Buba, Director of Defence Media Operations, made the disclosure during a press briefing held in Abuja on Thursday. General Buba stated that following a thorough investigation into the incident, disciplinary measures have been initiated against those found culpable.
“The affected personnel are to face a court martial for acts of omission or commission with respect to the incident,” General Buba confirmed. He refrained from divulging further details, citing the ongoing legal proceedings.
However, General Buba reiterated that the air strike was a regrettable mistake, emphasizing that the victims were erroneously identified as terrorists. He expressed condolences on behalf of the Chief of Defence Staff and the Armed Forces of Nigeria to the families and loved ones of those affected by the tragic incident.
“It is hoped that there would be no repeat of strikes on non-combatants in ongoing operations,” General Buba emphasized, underscoring the military’s commitment to taking extra precautions to ensure the safety of non-combatants in future operations.
The announcement of the court martial proceedings underscores the seriousness with which the military is addressing the incident. As the legal process unfolds, attention remains focused on ensuring accountability and preventing similar tragedies in the future.
