The Military Pensions Board (MPB) has initiated an electronic verification exercise for retired military personnel, aiming to enhance security, reduce financial burdens, and streamline the verification process. The Chairman of the Pensions Board, Air Vice Marshal Paul Irumheson announced the development during a briefing in Abuja on Thursday.

The primary motivation behind the shift to electronic verification is to mitigate security risks associated with veterans’ travel and alleviate financial constraints for pensioners residing outside Nigeria. According to Irhumheson, the physical verification process faced challenges due to factors such as the advanced age of pensioners and the high cost of transportation.

To address these issues, the MPB has introduced the “Military Pensions Board Electronic Verification Management System,” a web-based application designed to allow pensioners to undergo verification remotely using mobile devices. The system will undergo a pilot test involving 9,600 pensioners selected from all 36 states of the Federation.

Irhumheson detailed the verification process, stating that pensioners would need to download the application from the Google Play Store or AppStore, agree to the attestation, input their bank details, and follow a step-by-step process that includes facial recognition, National Identity Number (NIN) or Driver’s License Number verification, and updating personal information. The completion of the process generates a reference number sent to pensioners via text message and email.

The pilot test is scheduled to take place from February 19 to March 1, 2024. Selected pensioners will receive SMS notifications instructing them to download the application and conduct the verification remotely, eliminating the need to visit the Board physically.

Irhumheson emphasized that the electronic verification system prioritizes accuracy, user-friendliness, and convenience. He assured pensioners that the system was designed to secure their welfare and prevent tampering with pension payments.

In closing, the Chairman stated that the MPB would conduct a widespread awareness campaign in the coming weeks to educate pensioners and the general public about the electronic verification system. He reiterated the Board’s commitment to ensuring timely payment of entitlements for pensioners and the Next-of-Kin of deceased personnel.

The shift from the traditional physical verification system to an electronic approach reflects the MPB’s commitment to leveraging technology for the benefit of retired military personnel, aligning with contemporary needs and challenges.
