The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has denied claims that coordinated airstrikes and ground operations targeting Lakurawa terrorists in Sokoto State were responsible for civilian casualties. It clarified that the fatalities resulted from secondary explosions caused by the destruction of terrorist logistics bases, not by erroneous military strikes.

Sokoto Airstrikes: Facts and Military Clarifications

Speaking at a press briefing, Major General Edward Buba, Director of Defence Media Operations, explained that intelligence confirmed the targeted location was a high-concentration terrorist hideout. According to him:

  • The operation was conducted with precision to minimize civilian harm.
  • Secondary explosions from the terrorists’ logistics hub caused the casualties reported in some media outlets.
  • Local sources confirmed that Lakurawa terrorists had embedded themselves in the village.

“We are professional in our actions, targeting terrorists and not innocent citizens. However, war is inherently tragic, and we deeply sympathize with those affected,” Buba stated.

Acknowledging Civilian Cooperation

The military praised the community for providing intelligence that enabled the successful operation and reiterated its commitment to protecting citizens and Nigeria’s territorial integrity.

Dismissal of Drone Threats by Boko Haram and ISWAP

The military also addressed concerns over reports that Boko Haram and ISWAP have acquired drones to attack troops. Major General Buba dismissed the claims, labeling the drones as non-military-grade and ineffective.

“These are merely toy drones used to harass civilians. There is no need for panic. We are taking proactive measures to neutralize any threats,” he assured.

No Foreign Military Bases or Proxy Wars in Nigeria

Buba firmly refuted allegations of foreign military bases in Nigeria or the country being a ground for proxy wars. He emphasized, “Nigeria remains committed to its sovereignty and will not allow its territory to be used for external conflicts.”

The military reassured citizens of its unwavering commitment to safeguarding lives and ensuring peace across the nation.
