MOJEC Chairman Hails Tinubu’s Import Ban, Sees “New Dawn” for Nigeria’s Metering Industry
MOJEC, a leading indigenous meter manufacturing and energy solutions company, has thrown its weight behind President Bola Tinubu’s ‘Nigeria First Policy’, particularly the directive banning the importation of products that can be manufactured locally.
Mrs. Mojisola Abdul, Chairman of MOJEC, commended the policy in a statement on Friday, describing it as a “bold and visionary move” that signals a “new dawn” for Nigeria’s industrial and economic advancement. She highlighted that the policy, which prioritises locally manufactured goods and services, especially in government procurement, is a critical step towards achieving national industrial rebirth and economic independence.
“President Tinubu’s ‘Nigeria First Policy’ is a strategic and transformative initiative that will unlock the vast potential of Nigerian industries,” Abdul stated. “As a proudly indigenous metering and energy solutions provider, MOJEC International wholeheartedly commends this policy and stands ready to support its successful implementation.”
Mrs. Abdul noted that the directive perfectly aligns with MOJEC’s long-standing commitment to local content development and national capacity building. “For us at MOJEC, this is more than policy; it is a philosophy we live by,” she explained. “As our guiding phrase goes, ‘Africa, and by extension, Nigeria, must begin to produce what it consumes.’ This mindset has shaped our operations, our investments, and our impact in the Nigerian power sector for over two decades.”
She expressed hope that the policy would serve as a catalyst for industrial expansion, job creation, and the promotion of local content, particularly within the power and energy sector where MOJEC plays a significant role.
MOJEC International has been at the forefront of Nigeria’s metering revolution, having deployed millions of meters across various government-backed initiatives. Before the privatisation of the power sector, available data indicates MOJEC deployed over 600,000 Non-Maximum Demand (NMD) and Maximum Demand (MD) meters nationwide.
Furthermore, the company served as the lead metering partner during the CAPMI and Vendor Financing schemes (2013-2018), deploying and financing more than 1 million NMD and MD meters. Under subsequent schemes like NMMP Phase 0 and MAP Phases I & II (2019-Date), MOJEC has supplied over 1.2 million meters in partnership with Distribution Companies (DisCos) across several states.
“To date, MOJEC has pioneered the deployment of Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) and Meter Data Management Systems (MDMS) in Nigeria, deploying over 3 million smart NMD meters nationwide, and installed over 200,000 MD smart meters,” the statement revealed. This represents approximately 60 per cent of the total meters deployed within the Nigeria Electricity Supply Industry (NESI), a testament to the company’s reliability, scale, and capacity as a trusted local manufacturer and strategic government partner.
In line with its strong backward integration strategy, MOJEC operates a state-of-the-art plastic manufacturing subsidiary, one of the largest plastic production facilities in the country, with an annual installed capacity of up to 2 million meter boxes.
Beyond metering, MOJEC, through its renewable energy subsidiary, Virtuitis Solaris (VSolaris), is expanding access to clean, affordable power in rural and off-grid communities. A notable project is the planned commissioning of an 880kWp Solar Hybrid Isolated Minigrid across seven communities in Plateau State, executed under the Rural Electrification Agency’s (REA) Nigeria Electrification Project.
Ayodeji Oladeji, General Manager of VSolaris, commented on the mini-grid initiative, stating that it marks a significant milestone in achieving sustainable energy access in Nigeria. “We are not just bringing power to these communities, we’re unlocking new economic and social opportunities for businesses, schools, and healthcare systems,” Oladeji said. “The mini-grid is expected to power thousands of homes and businesses, enabling economic activities, education, and healthcare services.”
MOJEC’s continued investment in local manufacturing and diverse energy solutions underscores its commitment to contributing to Nigeria’s energy sector development and economic growth, aligning keenly with the objectives of the ‘Nigeria First Policy’.
