Major General Taoreed Lagbaja, the Chief of Army Staff, has called upon the troops of the Nigerian Army to supplement their military efforts with prayers for the success of the Nigerian Army (NA) in its operational engagements and the unity of Nigeria as an indivisible entity, especially in the face of contemporary security challenges.

The Army Chief made this clarion call during the Interdenominational Church Service held on 2nd July 2023 at the Mogadishu Military Cantonment, Abuja, to mark the Nigerian Army Day Celebration (NADCEL) 2023. Last week, the NA commenced its 160th-anniversary commemoration since its establishment in 1867, when 18 men known as the Glover Hausas of the Royal Navy were organized into the formidable force that it is today.

General Lagbaja emphasized that the NA remains the pride of the nation and a force to be reckoned with in Africa and globally. The Interdenominational Church Service serves as part of the activities organized across all NA formations and units to commemorate the birth of the NA, symbolizing national unity and integration.

It provides an opportunity for prayers and supplications to be offered to God Almighty on behalf of the Nigerian Army, the Armed Forces of Nigeria, and the entire nation.

“While celebrating our 160th year, I must acknowledge that our journey has not been without challenges. The Nigerian Army, in its commitment to national unity, has fought a civil war, engaged in peacekeeping and peace enforcement missions, and is currently combating terrorism, insurgency, and other criminal activities across the country,” expressed the Army Chief. General Lagbaja further highlighted that the NA’s various engagements, both within and outside Nigeria, have resulted in the loss of loved ones and breadwinners. “We have shed blood, cared for the wounded in action, and witnessed the growing number of widows, widowers, and orphans. Our sacrifices are driven by love for God, humanity, and our country,” he added.

General Lagbaja urged all NA personnel to reflect upon the prevailing security challenges and incorporate them into their prayers, firmly believing that God Almighty will crown the efforts of the NA and the Armed Forces of Nigeria with success.

He charged all personnel to continue giving their best in reciprocation of the government’s support by remaining loyal, disciplined, patriotic, and resolute in combating security challenges across various operational theaters.

The COAS reassured his commitment to the welfare and well-being of the troops under his command, pledging to provide further support in these areas.
