Nasiriya Movement Launched in Sokoto as El-Rufai Eyes 2027 Presidency

Sokoto, Nigeria – The Nasiru El-Rufai Solidarity Group, popularly known as Nasiriya, a new political movement under the Social Democratic Party (SDP), was inaugurated on Thursday in Sokoto State. The movement is seen as a strategic initiative to support the anticipated presidential ambition of former Kaduna State Governor, Nasiru El-Rufai, ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The National Coordinator of Nasiriya, Alhaji Ibrahim Babuga, led the inauguration of the state leadership, describing the movement as a rapidly expanding political and social force grounded in reformist ideals. According to Babuga, Nasiriya is committed to promoting good governance, inclusivity, and youth empowerment, values that are reflective of El-Rufai’s leadership record in public office.

Babuga revealed that the movement has gained significant traction across Northern Nigeria, particularly in Kaduna, Kano, Maiduguri, Niger, Katsina, and Sokoto states. He stated that Nasiriya aims to provide a viable alternative platform for progressive-minded Nigerians who are dissatisfied with the current state of affairs.

The National Coordinator emphasized that the organization’s core principles are rooted in accountability, transparency, and equitable development. He also called for increased female participation in the 2027 elections, assuring that the group will fully support any woman interested in contesting for political office.

The SDP Chairman in Sokoto State, Alhaji Sani Romo, welcomed the Nasiriya movement, highlighting the party’s presence in the state since 1992 and its active role in past elections. He described El-Rufai’s entry into the SDP as a significant boost and a litmus test for the party’s ambition to become Nigeria’s leading political force.

Romo assured the party’s teeming youth that the SDP remains committed to partnering with them in building a brighter future and delivering responsible leadership.

The State Grand Patron of Nasiriya, Alhaji Sunusi Gidadawa, stated that the movement was borne out of shared ideals and a collective desire to create a better future, especially for Northern Nigeria. He stressed the need for visionary leadership that would restore the region’s lost glory in areas such as security, agriculture, and peaceful coexistence.

Gidadawa expressed confidence that the challenges facing the region will be addressed, and the North will witness renewed progress and prosperity with the Nasiriya movement.

The State Coordinator of Nasiriya, Mr. Sunusi Lamido, pledged to continue mobilizing support to ensure the success of the movement, praising El-Rufai’s leadership qualities as the motivation behind their unwavering commitment.

The inauguration of Nasiriya in Sokoto State marks a significant development in the lead-up to the 2027 general elections, as the movement seeks to promote a new brand of politics centered on good governance, inclusivity, and youth empowerment.
