The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has successfully rescued two daughters of Hon. Aminu Ardo, a member of the Zamfara State House of Assembly, after they spent 19 harrowing months in captivity. The rescue operation, a collaborative effort involving multiple security agencies and coordinated by the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA), underscores the renewed focus on security reforms in Nigeria.
Details of the Abduction and Rescue:
Speaking at the Force Headquarters in Abuja during the handover of the rescued children to their father, Inspector General of Police Kayode Egbetokun detailed the ordeal the family endured. In November 2022, the serene village of Jangebe in Talata Mafara local government area of Zamfara State was violently disrupted when armed bandits, mounted on over 60 motorcycles, invaded the home of Honourable Aminu Ardo. In a terrifying display of force, they abducted his wife, Hauwa’u, and their four young children: Maryam, Nana Asma’u, Ummul Khairi, and Abdulrazaq.
The family was transported to an unknown forest in Katsina State, facing a brutal journey on foot and motorcycle. Throughout their captivity, the children were given only maize and salt to eat and drank water from a nearby stream. Hauwa’u, while in captivity, gave birth under extremely harsh conditions, but tragically, the newborn did not survive. Despite these unbearable circumstances, Hauwa’u’s resolve remained unbroken. One night, during the rainy season of 2023, she managed to unchain herself and escaped with two of her children, Ummul Khairi and Abdulrazaq. Unfortunately, Maryam and Nana Asma’u were left behind.
Collaborative Effort and Strategic Operation:
Inspector General Egbetokun highlighted that the successful rescue of Maryam and Nana Asma’u was made possible through the concerted efforts of various security agencies. Leveraging advanced intelligence from the Force Intelligence Department, operational tactics from the Anti-Kidnapping Squad of the Katsina Command, and tactical support from the Nigerian Airforce 215 FOB in Funtua, the children were located and safely rescued.
Under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, there has been a robust focus on enhancing the effectiveness and responsiveness of Nigeria’s security architecture. This successful operation is a testament to these strategic initiatives and the relentless pursuit of criminals by the Nigeria Police Force.
Ongoing Commitment to Security:
While celebrating this victory, IGP Egbetokun acknowledged the ongoing challenges in combating kidnapping and violent crimes. He reaffirmed the police force’s commitment to tackling these issues head-on, utilizing the latest technologies and intelligence-gathering methods, and ensuring that justice is served. The dedication of police officers and the importance of intelligence sharing and community support were emphasized as crucial elements in the fight against crime.
Sympathy and Assurance:
The IGP expressed deep sympathies to the families affected by such crimes, acknowledging their pain and resilience. He assured them that the Nigeria Police Force remains steadfast in its mission to provide a safe and secure environment for all citizens, particularly children.
Appreciation for Support:
In his remarks, IGP Egbetokun also acknowledged and appreciated the leadership and coordinating role of the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA), whose strategic support was instrumental in the success of this operation.
