Nigeria to Host Global Leaders for Crucial Migration Talks

Nigeria is set to play host to global leaders and stakeholders from over 57 countries as it prepares to chair a high-level meeting on migration and development.

The two-day conference, scheduled to take place on May 13-14th, 2025, will bring together delegates from the Euro-African Dialogue on Migration and Development, popularly known as the Rabat Process.

The meeting, which will be co-chaired by Nigeria and the Kingdom of Spain, will focus on the theme ‘Youth, Innovation, and Education: Driving the Future of Migration’.

According to the Federal Commissioner of the National Commission for Refugees, Migrants, and Internally Displaced Persons (NCFRMI), Tijani Ahmed, the conference will feature discussions on policy direction, cooperative efforts among countries of origin, transit, and destination, as well as exploring inclusive policies and stronger cooperation to reshape migration positively.

With over 100 delegates expected to attend the meeting, Ahmed highlighted the significance of the diaspora community in knowledge transfer, investment, and remittances.

He noted that young migrants contribute meaningfully to their home countries, bringing innovations across borders. “It is worthy to note that Africa is experiencing a demographic surge with over 75 per cent of the world’s under-35 population residing on the continent,” Ahmed said.

The conference aims to harness the potential of youth, innovation, and education to drive the future of migration. By bringing together global leaders and stakeholders, the meeting is expected to shape cooperative efforts and guide policy direction on migration and development.

As Nigeria takes on the chairmanship of the Rabat Process, the country is poised to play a key role in shaping the global narrative on migration and its impact on countries in Europe and Africa.

The meeting is significant, coming at a time when migration is a pressing global issue. By focusing on the themes of youth, innovation, and education, the conference is expected to provide a platform for stakeholders to explore new ideas and strategies for managing migration and maximizing its benefits.

As the world grapples with the challenges and opportunities presented by migration, Nigeria’s hosting of the Rabat Process meeting is a timely and important development that is expected to have far-reaching implications for the global community.
