The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has dismissed allegations linking its operatives to the recent explosion at the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) wellhead in Buguma Community, Asari-Toru Local Government Area, Rivers State.

In a statement issued on Monday, NAF’s Director of Public Relations and Information, Air Vice Marshal Olusola Akinboyewa, described the claims as “false and unfounded,” calling on media organisations to verify their reports before publishing.

“The Nigerian Air Force categorically refutes this misleading report,” Akinboyewa said. “Contrary to allegations, the wellhead in question had been leaking crude oil for a prolonged period due to persistent illegal activities in the area.”

Evidence Refutes Claims

Akinboyewa explained that high-definition video footage from NAF missions, including recordings from December 2024, showed the wellhead leaking crude oil and the surrounding area already engulfed in flames before NAF operations began.

“Video recordings confirm that the wellhead had been leaking for an extended period, leading to the accumulation of gas and flammable liquids in the area. The footage also shows that the barge in question was already burnt before the arrival of NAF operatives,” he stated.

He emphasized that the onboard camera systems used by the NAF ensure transparency and accountability, documenting all activities and ruling out any possibility of indiscriminate targeting of civilians or assets.

Commitment to Professionalism

Akinboyewa reaffirmed the Air Force’s dedication to professionalism, stressing that NAF operations are meticulously planned to target only illegal refining sites and equipment, ensuring the safety of civilians and critical infrastructure.

“The NAF ensures due diligence before engaging any target. Safeguarding innocent lives and protecting national infrastructure remain our top priorities,” he added.

The statement concluded by assuring the public that the NAF remains committed to protecting Nigeria’s critical infrastructure, combating crude oil theft, and maintaining the highest standards of professionalism and respect for human life.
